Happy Homes With Tess

In this Happy Homes article, we ask Tess from @homestylebytess to talk about their inspiration and all time favorites within the interior styling world.

Hi Tess, tell us a little about yourself…

Hi Erin! I’m Tess, a 25 year old from Perth. I am a full time teacher, while studying my masters part time in the background. I have a passion for all things ‘home’ and see myself as a slight perfectionist when it comes to this. I like to keep busy, so between work, study and my instagram page, @homestylebytess, I am also planning my Wedding for next year!

When did you find your passion for interior styling?

My passion for interior styling started in 2019, when I purchased my first home. I spent hours on end scrolling through instagram, Pinterest, and an incredible amount of online furniture and décor stores. This passion has only grown since as I have finally found my styling ‘niche’ and own personal style. In a few short years, almost every space in my home looks completely different as my style as evolved.

What do you think the next design trend will be?

That is a great question…I am really hoping this gorgeous neutral aesthetic is here to stay because that is definitely my thing! I am seeing a lot more boucle coming into trends, so for the future I am expecting lots of textures, whether it be velvet or who knows what! I must say though, I am hoping the rattan trend never gets old!

Where do you look for inspiration?

Honestly this instagram community is the most incredible source or inspiration. I could scroll for hours on end and come out with a significant bank of ideas and inspiration. Pinterest used to be my jam, but I find instagram easier to navigate and find accurate representations of home styling!

What are your must have / most used items within your home?

Surely you mean my couch right? My favourite spot to cosy up on and relax! Throw blankets and cushions are a must have for me, they can completely change and make a room feel so much warmer! Wall décor such as artwork and mirrors are another must, to me a space feels so empty without it, plus its another great addition that can be swapped in and out to change the vibe of a room!

What do you like to do in your free time?

What spare time?! Just kidding, I adore spending time with my family, so weekends and down time is usually spent catching up and spending time together. I LOVE traveling and going on adventures whether it be a hike, a road trip or catching a flight somewhere.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Good things take time. I spent so much time rushing around and wanting everything to my complete straight away. But let’s be honest, good things do take time, and I am learning to embrace that (slowly).

Do you have a favourite piece of furniture?

I wish I could say yes to this one, but honestly, I could name a hundred! I love each and every piece of furniture in my home. However, if I really had to pick it would definitely be my couch from Plush!

Do you prefer plain decor or incorporating patterns and textures?

I have always been such a plain décor person…but recently I have been loving adding in different textures! I love the beige gingham look at the moment, and of course, anything rattan has my heart.

What do you enjoy most about interior styling?

Seeing a space come to life is so rewarding. Looking back at how my house started, it was simple a house. I have created a home, full of personality, that is constantly evolving and reflecting my style.

When did you start your instagram account and did you anticipate growing such a large following?

My page started in 2019. Never in my wildest dreams could I have anticipated the growing to this amount of following. I have always posted what I love, for myself, and anyone who follows along is just an amazing benefit and I am forever grateful for everyone who does.

What are some of your favourite brand collaborations you’ve worked with on instagram?

Oh so many!
My favourite brand that I have continued to work with is Little Label Co, Nat’s products are just incredible and feed my love of organisation. I also did a collaboration with Miss Amara Loves and it was just so fun (plus, oh my goodness, the most stunning rugs).

When planning out a space do you create moodboards first or do you style as you go?

I wouldn’t specifically say I create moodboards as such, I do sometimes create a mini version of a room to see what furniture would look like. I guess I would say I find pieces that I love, and then work on incorporating them into my home.

What’s your next project or room refresh?

I have recently finished a few new projects, so nothing major in the mix at the moment. I do want to refresh the paint in the other wall of my office that is currently pink, but that is it for the time being!
